Israeli art invades New York

Artis, the annual outing of Israeli Contemporary Art In New York, opened February 21 with performance by Nelly Agassi at Manhattan's Chelsea Art Museum. This Artis season, running from February through May, features a major exhibition organized by Senior Curator Susan Tumarkin Goodman at The Jewish Museum, exhibiting 48 works by 23 international artists, of whom 16 are Israeli. "Dateline Israel: New Photography and Video Art" blends the responses of Israelis like Boaz Arad, Yael Bartana, Miki Kratsman, Leora Laor, and Sharon Ya'ari, alongside Wim Wenders and others. Other highlights of Artis '07 include Ecologus: Perspectives on an Imperiled Habitat, with works in a variety of media looking at the ecological crisis in exhibitions at the Makor Gallery; Homebase II/Study, exploring the notions of home at the Broadway Gallery; Current Visions:Part 2 at the Andrea Meislin Gallery, focusing on the usage of land in Israel; and Israeli artists featured at Sotheby's auction of Israeli art and at the New York Armory Show. Barry Frydlender first appeared at the Andrea Meislin Gallery in New York in Artis '04 and then again in subsequent years. This year, a solo exhibition of his images opens at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in May. Isoelectric, a solo exhibition by Miriam Cabessa, features at Slate Gallery this month, in the framework of After Hours , a night of galleries open till 11pm in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The Noga Gallery is at Pulse New York, with works by Ori Gersht, Roi Kuper, Talia Keinan and others; Orit Raff's Insatiable is at Julie Saul Gallery; Zigi Ben Haim at Stefan Stux and Yoav Ben Dov at the Manhattan Commercial Realty Corporation. Israeli artists Chana Cromer and Zvi Lachman are at the Yeshiva University Museum; and exhibitions by Tamar Hirschl, Rachel Papo, and conceptual jewelry and objects by Israeli artists are at the museum of Hebrew Union College.
