The eccentric British trio led by flamboyant frontman Martyn Jacques, has been been perfecting their warped blend of macabre Brechtian show tunes about the dark side of London life for almost 20 years.Jacques and his songs featuring pimps, prostitutes and thieves, are bolstered by an equally outrageous visual show – with percussionist Adrian Huge making use of silverware and spatulas and bassist Adrian Stout just as likely to parade around the stage in a kilt.The Tiger Lillies were nominated for a Grammy for their 2003 album The Gorey End, a collaboration with the Kronos Quartet. Famed illustrator Matt Groening chose them to be on the bill of the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival he curated in May 2010.David Brinn
Briza Festival turns 20The annual Briza music festival at the Ashkelon Amphitheater is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a stellar lineup over four days from August 22-25.Ethnix will be opening the show with a special performance in honor of their own anniversary of 25 years as a musical unit. Special guests will include Shiri Maimon and Shimon Buskila. Other performers during the festival include Moshe Peretz, Avihu Medina, Dudu Erez and Hatikva 6. Headlining the final night will be Shlomo Artzi, fresh from his performance at the massive tent city protest rally last Saturday night.Ticket information is available at (03) 966-6141.David Brinn PM’s Prize winners announcedThe Ministry of Culture has announced the winners of the Prime Minister’s Prize 2010 for outstanding achievement in music. Each of the winners will receive NIS 67,000. The winners in the Concert Music category are composers Yosef Bardanashvili, Avner Hanani, Dganit Elyakim, Amos Elkana and Shai Cohen. The jazz prize goes to flautist, composer and teacher Ilan Salam. The prize-giving will take place on October 5 at the Rebecca Crown Hall in the Jerusalem Theater.Jerusalem Post Staff Season opener at GesherThe Gesher Theater will present the comedy Jessica, adapted and directed by Gur Koren, author of Five Kilos of Sugar. The play is based on US playwright A.R.Gurney’s Sylvia, the story of a couple who adopt a stray dog that almost wrecks their marriage. Koren has moved the action to Israel where real life couple Dvir Bendek and Irit Natan Bendek play Eldad and Carmit, a happily married couple. When Eldad brings home Jessica (Ronit Bekerman), their lives turn upside down as Eldad becomes increasingly infatuated with Jessica, but in the end, it’s four-legged Jessica who teaches the two-legged pair what love means. Jessica opens at the Gesher Hangar in Jaffa on September 19.Helen Kaye
