There is a voyage of klezmer discovery on offer at Avi Chai House in Jerusalem on Thursday, with the A Voyage through Time to Ashkenazi Soul Music program.
The evening comprises a rich lineup of entertainment and education that opens, at 8:30 p.m., with the Klezmers’ Voyage documentary film about a tour by 12-piece French klezmer outfit Le Beigale Orkestra around Israel in summer 2009. In between shots of the ensemble’s shows the film delves into various aspects of klezmer culture in different places around the world, and looks at the idea of defining identity through music.
The screening will be followed a discussion with ensemble member violinist Amit Weissberger, and the evening’s jolly and informative proceedings will wind up with a performance by Yiddisheh Fantasia trio. The concert will feature a wide range of klezmer material culled from performances and recordings through the ages. The group will play songs recorded in Eastern Europe in the early years of the 20th century, which were revived by Yiddisheh Fantasia. The show will also include archival video clips of original renderings, as well as klezmer numbers performed in a far more contemporary way.
