High-energy cross-genre Israeli band The Shuk will perform at the Tel Aviv Beach Festival in Riga, Latvia, on August 2.
Led by vocalist/flutist/guitarist Yoni Avital, the five-member band aims to bring people from disparate backgrounds together in order to experience Jewish culture, and also to gain an appreciation, respect and mutual understanding for all cultures and people around the word.
Founded in 2008, The Shuk delves into a wide spectrum of musical genres and styles to convey its merry message, ranging from jazz to Middle Eastern music, and from folk material to liturgical music.
The band has released two albums to date, and has appeared at festivals, conferences, academic institutions and concert halls in over 30 countries worldwide, including the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, Greece and Germany.
With the continuing hostilities in Gaza and across the south and center of Israel, and the negative global response to Operation Protective Edge, it will make a nice change for an Israeli group to get some applause for its artistic efforts in Latvia.
