KILLING THEM SOFTLY
Adapted from George V. Higgins’s novel and set in New
Orleans, Killing Them Softly is the story of professional enforcer Jackie Cogan
(Brad Pitt), who investigates a heist that occurs during a mob-protected poker
game. The starstudded cast includes Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini, Sam Shepard,
Richard Jenkins and Scott McNairy. At theater around the
country.
2. EXHIBITIONS
WALKING IN AFRICA
”Exploring Its Beauty” is a new
photography and installation exhibition by artist Gila Stein, documenting a trip
she made to Ethiopia. The photographs explore the different nature and human
vistas of the African country.

3. MODERN JUDAICA
The Israel Museum presents “Forging Ahead:
Wolpert and Gumbel, Israeli Silversmiths for the Modern Age.” It is comprised of
80 works, many shown for the first time, by two of the most influential
designers of modern Judaica – David Heinz Gumbel (1906-1992) and Ludwig Yehuda
Wolpert (1900-1981). The exhibition traces the evolution of the designers’
style.

4. POETIC
AQUARELLES
Marking 27 years since his death, the Gutman Museum in Tel Aviv holds
an exhibition of aquarelles by Yosef Zaritsky, a great Israeli painter who was
famous for his watercolors. Forty works, created between 1918 and 1980, showcase
the best of this important artist. From tomorrow until February 11, Shimon

5. MIXED
IN HIS FOOTSTEPS
The 20th Ben-Gurion
walk will take place this weekend in the Negev, with three different routes, one
of which follows Ben-Gurion’s seven-kilometer daily route. Other options include
a 13-km. route and a 20-km route in the beautiful nature sites of the
area.

6. MUSIC
SEASONAL CONCERT
Winterreise
(Winter Journey), the famous song cycle for voice and piano by Schubert, is the
centerpiece of a concert by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra tonight, with
pianist Christoph Eschenbach and baritone Matthias Goerne. The concert,
performed by the singer and pianist worldwide, has won rave reviews. The two
will also participate in the IPO’s concerts next week.

7. MESMERIZING MUSIC
The
dehumanizing effects of society on a young man’s life are the subject of
Woyzeck, an opera based on Georg Buchner’s play, set to mesmerizing music by
Alban Berg. The Israeli Opera’s production is one of the most impressive ever
staged here. Philip Horst and Julian Tovey will alternate in the leading role of
Woyzeck, and David Stern will conduct. The opera is sung in German with
English and Hebrew surtitles.

8. CROSS-CULTURAL
A
Dutch-Israeli musical project combining Western music with influences of
Iranian, Jewish and Arab music, Levantasy comes to Israel next week as
part of
an international tour. The project is a collaboration of Israeli
musician Yoram Lachish and the Kepera Trio, a leading ethnic-jazz
ensemble.

10. LATIN RHYTHMS
Opening this year’s Jazz at the
Mishkan series is the Miguel Zenon Quartet playing Puerto Rican classics for the
first time in Israel. Saxophone player and composer Zenon is one of the rising
stars of today’s jazz music world, combining influences from his Latin roots
with new and creative jazz stylings.
