South Jet 227 departs from Orlando, Florida, for what should be a routine trip.
Captain Whip Whitaker is at the helm of the Jackson-Ridgefield 88 passenger jet, along with first officer Ken Evans, who is Whip’s polar opposite in every way. But the flight soon encounters heavier than- anticipated turbulence as they fly into a massive storm. Flight is Robert Zemeckis’s latest action film, starring Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly and John Goodman.

A project of restored European film classics comes to Israel, bringing a selection of outstanding movies to the cinematheques in Haifa, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv during January, beginning tonight. It’s a joint project of the European Union and local embassies, the representatives of which see preserving and showing these films as a way to spread awareness of the greatest achievements of European culture and to encourage a better understanding of European life.

Flamenco artist Tania Vinokur and her ensemble Flamenco Fusion Theater return with their second show, Cuadros. The artist combines her talents as a dancer, musician- composer and violinist in a story-driven musical show with her sixmember ensemble.

TELEVISION 5. WATCH THE ‘GOLDEN’ GIRLS
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will host the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards on January 13 in what promises to be one of the better award shows ever. The ceremony will be broadcast in Israel on YES, in the early morning hours between Sunday and Monday.
DANCE 6. GET INTO THE IRISH RHYTHM
Irish mega-dance company Lord of the Dance returns to Israel after three years, for a tour of 14 performances around the country. They arrive here with an all-new show, 40 dancers and their boundless energy, beginning Tuesday at the Haifa Congress Hall; from January 18 at the Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv; and from January 23 at Binyenei Ha’uma in Jerusalem.

ART 7. DISCOVER NEW HORIZONS
A group exhibition at Beit Mani in Tel Aviv titled “New Horizons” opens today. The show is comprised of six one-man shows, bringing six stories that outline the horizons of our times. A preserved building that dates back to the early years of the city, Beit Mani hosts local art shows, promoting and advancing both established artists and upcoming ones.

MIXED BAG 8. TAKE AN ART CLASS
As part of the Cargo Cult exhibition at MoBY, the Museums of Bat Yam, there will be a scenery-painting workshop on January 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. The workshop will be led by artists from the New Barbizon group. Art supplies will be provided by the museum.
Participation is free, but the number of places is limited, registration must be done before January 16.

DANCE 9. CELEBRATE 20 YEARS
The Vertigo Dance Company will present a new evening called Vertigo 20, celebrating 20 years of work. For the first time this Israeli company, with choreographer and founder Noa Wertheim, will perform with a cast that includes international dancers, and together they explore the company’s unique artistic language.

Jazz pianist Jacky Terrasson is one of the highlights of the winter Red Sea Jazz Festival in Eilat, in the company of bassist Burniss Earl Travis II and drummer EJ Strickland (next Thursday and Friday).
