Tom took his first pictures when he was about eleven years old, using the family's folding bellows roll-film camera. His mother was not impressed and thought he was wasting precious film shooting old farm machinery that he found visually interesting.

However, talent found a way and he went to Art College in his twenties. He borrowed the college's SLR, a solid, metal-bodied Pentax K1000, but his creativity did not impress the art teachers either. Photography was not regarded as a serious art form and was frowned upon. Undaunted, Tom went on to receive a BA Hons degree.

After college, Tom bought his first serious camera, and developed his passion for photography. He became a professional photographer, shooting mainly fashion models, architecture and products. Tom is also now a professional retoucher and a website designer.

Tom loves to teach and inspire, and in his photography courses and field trips he shares his knowledge in a very practical, pragmatic and hands-on style.
