Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said on Sunday that Israel is "dramatizing" the Palestinian bid for membership in the United Nations expected later this month.

In an interview with the Center for Strategic Dialogue at the Netanya Academic College, Ayalon added that in his opinion, "objectively as possible," the UN bid goes "against the interests of the Palestinians."

Whether there is recognition of Palestinian statehood or not, he said, such steps have already been taken in the past. Yasser Arafat "declared the establishment of a Palestinian state in November '88 in Algeria. One month later, in December '88, it was accepted in the United Nations - in the same UN [General] Assembly that stands to discuss the issue again."

"One hundred and four countries recognized a Palestinian state and what happened?" Ayalon added, "Not a lot."
