Barcelona's international airport was shut down on Sunday afternoon as the volcanic ash cloud covering Europe spread further south and further west.

The cloud, which originally spread from a volcano in southern Iceland, has caught Europe in its confines, causing most of the continent's airports to cease all activity.

The airports in Madrid, Rome, Athens and Istanbul were still operating on Sunday afternoon.
