Yosef Chechanover was chosen over the weekend to be the Israeli representative in the panel of experts the UN set up to investigate the May 31 IDF raid of a Gaza-bound Turkish aid ship in which nine pro-Palestinian activists were killed.

The decision to elect Chechanover was made by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

Chechanover formerly served as Bureau Chief of the Foreign Ministry and as legal counsel for the Defense Ministry.

Chechanover was scheduled to leave for New York soon, where he will meet with the rest of the UN investigatory team led by former New Zealand prime minister Geoffrey Palmer.
