China has welcomed proposed talks between North and South Korean military officers for the first time since a November artillery attack intensified tensions on the peninsula, reported AFP on Friday.

"We welcome and support the move by North Korea and South Korea to improve their relations through dialogue, moving towards reconciliation and cooperation," AFP quoted foreign affairs spokesman Hong Lei as saying.

"We hope this dialogue will bring about a positive result."
