WASHINGTON - US Democrats are united in their desire to reach a sweeping deal with Republicans that would tame the national debt and avert a looming default, a Democrat familiar with the talks said on Sunday.

Democrats are willing to consider changes to popular benefit programs, but "Republicans are refusing to take yes for an answer" because they don't want to raise revenues, the source said.
