Dennis Ross: US must impose harsher sanctions on Iran, implement them if talks fail

The US needs to pass harsher sanctions on Iran, but implement them only if talks fail to secure a deal to curb Tehran's military nuclear program, Dennis Ross, former advisor to US President Barack Obama on the Middle East, said at the Jewish Agency's 21013 Assembly on Sunday.

"Everyone in the United States agree that it is to our strategic interest to stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear bomb," Ross said. "The US administration's disagreement with Israel is tactic, and not strategic."

"The idea behind the deal with Iran is to stop their nuclear program and show them there will be no more concessions. The economic sanctions were meant to bring Iran to the negotiating table, but they are not enough and diplomatic measures must be taken," he added.
