Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy said that Egypt does not favor either side in Syria after a meeting with the UN Arab League envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi on Saturday, according to the Egyptian newspaper El-Watan.

Brahimi said that “intense efforts” are under way to hold a peace conference in Geneva next month to resolve the Syrian crisis, AFP reported.

“Our hope is that the conference would be held,” he said.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister also said that Cairo supports a “political solution” and that the “sovereignty and unity” of Syria should be maintained.

Brahimi is set to make a regional tour to gather support for the Geneva II peace conference.
