The Egyptian military decided to go ahead with a plan of cleansing Mount Halal in the Sinai Peninsula, which houses "armed gangs and terrorists," military sources told the Arab daily Al-Hayat in a report published on Friday.

Such an operation would include artillery and air power in order "to resolve the battle quickly." However, the army would first give the militants a chance to surrender.

Attack plans come after suspected jihadists killed a police officer in Sinai on Friday

Meanwhile, the Egyptian daily al-Ahram reported on Friday that Sudan thwarted an attempt to smuggle weapons and ammunition into Egypt.
