UNITED NATIONS - UN-Arab League mediator Lakhdar Brahimi told the UN Security Council on Tuesday that Syrian President Bashar Assad may be able to cling to power for now but the country is "breaking up before everyone's eyes," diplomats told Reuters.
"The Syrian regime's legitimacy has been seriously, probably irreparably, damaged," Brahimi told the 15-nation council behind closed doors, council diplomats present at the meeting quoted him as saying.
