High air pollution expected through Tuesday morning

Air pollution levels were high throughout the day Monday and will remain so through Tuesday morning due to a sizable presence of respirable particles swept northward by a dust storm, the Environmental Protection Ministry said on Monday.

The dust storm is due to a deep low pressure system over the eastern Mediterranean Sea, which is causing strong winds, sand storms and dust storms to blow from North Africa and into Israel, the ministry explained.

Due to the pollution, the ministry recommended that sensitive populations – such as heart and lung patients, the elderly, children and pregnant women – avoid strenuous physical activity.
