Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai sent a letter to Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi Yisrael Lau, asking that he put an end to the brutality associated with the pre-Yom Kippur chicken slaughter.

Oftentimes, the chickens are kept in cruel conditions up until their slaughter and end up dying in agony, with small children watching their deaths, according to Huldai.

"I ask you to act to prevent the existence of chicken slaughter for the practice of kaparot around the city, in different neighborhoods and in residential areas," Huldai wrote.

The mayor asked that the rabbi stress to the population that there are many other alternative deeds that constitute mitzvot, without involving cruelty to animals.
