Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz on Thursday announced that Israel Railways would not be closed down, as had been threatened, after management and the employees' union came to an agreement on a new safety program.

In June, Katz had said that he would shut down train services, unless a new rail safety plan was implemented by mid-August.
