ROME - Italy on Friday recalled its ambassador to Brazil after it refused to extradite a former Italian left-wing guerrilla convicted of murder, the Italian Foreign Ministry said.

The decision by Brazil's supreme court earlier this week to uphold a government refusal to extradite Cesare Battisti brought relations between Italy and Brazil to a low point, with leading Italian officials calling the move a shameful violation of international agreements.
