J Street on Thursday condemned as "ripped from Joe McCarthy's playbook" the Knesset decision to establish a committee to investigate left-wing Israeli human rights and civil society organizations.

"We will not stand by as political opponents try to intimidate these important voices for human rights, Jewish values, and Israel's democracy," a statement read, defending NGOs B’Tselem, Yesh Din and Breaking The Silence.

"These groups work tirelessly to fight racism and anti-democratic tendencies.  They are working for an Israel we can believe in – a national home for the Jewish people that really is democratic, just and secure," the statement added.
