The outcome of the March 17 elections in Israel will decrease the chances for lasting peace, Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal told the London-based BBC on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's re-election is bound to spike extremism, the head of Hamas' political bureau said.

He said that while Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip,  is not seeking an escalation, it will defend itself.
