Man behind anti-Islam film denies violating probation

LOS ANGELES - A California man behind an anti-Islam film that stoked violent protests in the Muslim world denied in court on Wednesday that he had violated probation on a bank fraud conviction, and was ordered to remain in jail until his case can be heard on its merits.

The Egyptian-born man, who has been known publicly as Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, appeared in federal court in Los Angeles amid tight security. He denied eight probation violation allegations, including lying to probation officials over his role in the making of the film.

He appeared in court under his legal name, Mark Basseley Youssef.
