LONDON - NATO said on Saturday it had bombed three ground-based Libyan state television satellite transmission dishes in Tripoli in order to silence "terror broadcasts" by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

"Our intervention was necessary as TV was being used as an integral component of the regime apparatus designed to systematically oppress and threaten civilians and to incite attacks against them," NATO spokesman Colonel Roland Lavoie said in a video statement distributed by the alliance's press service.

He said the effectiveness of the strike was being assessed.

Following the statement, Libyan state television, monitored by Reuters in London, was still on the air.
