Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Zionist Union Chairman Issac Herzog sent their condolences to US Vice President Joe Biden on Sunday, in light of the death of his eldest son, Beau, who died of brain cancer that same day.

In a letter, Netanyahu referred to Biden as a friend and wrote that he had often discussed Beau with him throughout the years that they had known each other.

"Beau had achieved much and gave a lot back," Netanyahu added, adding that his "prayers are with the Biden family in this difficult hour."

Herzog wished Biden that he and his family "know no more grief" and wrote that "Beau's legacy, as a leader, military and public figure, is a model for patriotism and statesmanship."

Beau, born Joseph Robinette "Beau" Biden III, had been struggling with brain cancer, and had been undergoing treatment since 2010. He succumbed to his illness at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda Maryland.

Beau Biden served as Attorney General of Delaware between 2007 and 2015, but also served in the National Guard, and was deployed to Iraq on multiple tours of duty.
