Northern Ireland faces mounting water crisis

LONDON  — Tens of thousands of people are without water in Northern Ireland after much of the supply drained away through broken pipes following a deep freeze and a sudden thaw.

Bottled water and water tankers are being brought in to large sections of towns and cities where public water supplies have been lost.

Officials said Wednesday that emergency crews are working around-the-clock to restore service and ease fears that contaminated water could lead to a disease outbreak.

Reservoirs have dropped dangerously low and there is a shortage of clean water for drinking, washing and cooking.

Doctors are warning that a public health crisis may develop if clean water is not quickly made available.
