President Shimon Peres expressed sorrow at the death of former prime minister Yitzhak Shamir on Saturday, referring to him as "a brave fighter before and after the establishment of the state."
Peres stated that Shamir "bravely fought against the British mandate in the days of the underground and his great contribution to the state of Israel as a member of the Mossad will stay forever etched in the book of our nation's heroism."
The president called Shamir a "great patriot" and "lover of Israel" that loyally served his country.
