"A fanatic religious oligarchy is not better than lack of democracy," President Shimon Peres told Costa Rican ambassador Rodrigo Carreras Jimenez on Monday when the latter presented his credentials.

Speaking of the dilemma currently confronting Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Peres said, "We still have great respect for Mubarak, he was a peacekeeper."

Peres said "people think that democracy is only a legend. Democracy is more than that," he said. "It also means peace and freedom."
