Police Insp.-Gen. Yohanan Danino has ordered cops stationed in cities with Arab and Jewish populations to raise their level of alert as Israelis prepare for the arrival of Yom Kippur at sundown on Friday.

According to Israel Radio, Danino has instructed his top commanders to reach out to religious leaders on all sides in hopes of defusing tensions during the next 36 hours.

This year, Yom Kippur falls on the same day as the Elevation of the Cross, which is why authorities are taking precautions in hopes of ensuring a smooth weekend without violence, according to Israel Radio.
