Turkish protesters set fire to Israeli flags in the streets of Istanbul on Monday in support of Arabs clashing with Israeli security forces in Jerusalem. Hundreds of protesters held up Palestinian flags, pictures of the Aksa Mosque and posters bearing prominent Hizbullah and Palestinian figures. The demonstration occurred near the Israeli Consulate building in the city. Foreign Ministry sources asserted that the riots were not a cause for concern, underlining that Islamist factions burn the Israeli flag in protests in the streets of Turkey on a regular basis. "Turkey is an important strategic partner," one Foreign Ministry source told Army Radio. Tensions in the Old City and east Jerusalem subsided somewhat Monday night, aided by the presence of 2,000 policemen.
