Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was accused of covering up an encounter between a Royal Air Force plane and a UFO during World War II, The Daily Mail reported on Thursday.

According to newly-released files, Churchill ordered that the incident be kept secret for at least 50 years in order to avoid "mass panic."

The claim was reportedly made by a scientist who said his grandfather, one of Churchill's bodyguards, was present during a meeting in which Churchill and US General Dwight Eisenhower discussed how to deal with the UFO encounter.
