GUATEMALA CITY - Otto Perez, a retired general from the right-wing Patriot Party, took an early lead in Guatemala's presidential election on Sunday, according to official results with 5 percent of the vote counted.

Perez had 37 percent of the votes counted, the electoral commission said. He would need to exceed 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff election.
