The US military has prepared contingency plans to send special operations teams into Syria to secure that country's chemical weapons stockpiles should they fall from the control of Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday evening.

The revelation followed US President Barack Obama's warning earlier this week that any effort by the Assad regime to use or move Syria's arsenal of weapons of mass destruction would cross a "red line."

US military officials told the Times that securing the weapons depots would likely involve stealth raids by troops trained in the handling of chemical weapons, along with surgical airstrikes to incinerate chemicals without dispersing them

The Pentagon officials stressed, however, that the White House has not yet ordered any detailed planning of operations regarding Syria.
