Russia on Thursday stressed the need to convene a proposed international conference on ending the Syrian civil war, Syrian state news agency SANA cited Moscow as saying.

According to a statement cited by SANA, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said importance had been placed on expediting the meeting to achieve a political settlement to the conflict during UN-brokered talks on Tuesday with the US and Russia on the issue.

The United States and Russia are planning a "Geneva 2" peace conference between the opposition and Syrian President Bashar Assad's government, but diplomatic deadlock has grown.
