A small tsunami was generated off the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu from a 7.5 magnitude earthquake which struck Tuesday, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The 9-inch (22 centimeter) wave was observed off Port Vila on Tuesday. The Hawaii-based warning center says there is no tsunami threat for other coastal areas in the Pacific.

The US Geological Survey says the quake hit about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Port Vila at a depth of 22 miles (35 kilometers).
