LONDON - Britain's parliament rejected a call for a national referendum on European Union membership on Monday, despite a large-scale rebellion against British Prime Minister David Cameron by lawmakers who want to opt out of the bloc.

Cameron had ordered his party to vote against the motion, arguing that Britain needs a strong voice in Europe to safeguard British trade and financial interests as euro zone leaders try to fix a sovereign debt crisis.
