Following the killing of Osama bin Laden and years of CIA drone operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan, US counter-terrorism officials believe al-Qaida may be on the brink of collapse, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday.

Officials stated that the organization's Yemenite offshoot had become a greater challenge than al-Qaida in Pakistan.

“Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula is nowhere near defeat,” Sen. Saxby Chambliss (Ga.), the ranking Republican on the Senate intelligence committee said, referring to the Yemen-based affiliate. “But when it comes to al-Qaida [core leadership in Pakistan], we have made the kind of strides that we need to make to be in a position of thinking we can win.”
