The Tel Aviv District Court published a ruling on Sunday allowing writer Yoram Kaniuk to be recorded in the population register as having "no religion".

Kaniuk, who was born in Tel Aviv to Jewish immigrants from Ukraine, petitioned the Interior Ministry to change his religious status from 'Jewish' to 'no religion' following his marriage to a Christian woman.

Kaniuk also said he has never identified as a religious Jew.

The ministry had said in response that since Kaniuk was registered as Jewish, a public document was required to change his religious status on the population register.
