A free computer program that makes possible direct communications between computers located dozens of meters from each other without any physical connection has been developed by researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. The developers, from the computer sciences department, say the WiFi link will soon be able to connect cellular phones (without their regular cellular line link), as well. Workers who go to an exhibition abroad and are sitting in different seats in a plane will now be able to work together on their PowerPoint presentation during flight, said Prof. Ro'i Friedman, who supervised the students who developed it. "Students will also be able to communicate during a lecture - but I don't recommend it," he added with a smile. The program can be downloaded free by anyone in the world from the Web site www.wipeer.com. Communications between computers in one place have not been common because it was complicated and involved a long process of filling out "fields" and pressing many buttons. The Technion researchers present new applications that did not exist before. The program was part of the Ph.D. thesis of Vadim Drabkin, Gabi Kaliot and Alon Kama, who worked on it for a year. They built a user-friendly application platform that easily allows computers to communicate with each other in nearby environments. One can send dozens of photos from one PC to another in less than a minute and full-length movies in 15 minutes or less, depending on the "age" of the computer and the speed of the wireless network card in it. One can also conduct chats or play games together, such as chess.
