LIKUD LEADER and former prime minister MK Binyamin Netanyahu will be the keynote speaker at the BESA Center's launch of Project 1948 - Researching the War of Independence. Prior to Netanyahu's address, Prof. Ephraim Karsch of Kings College will speak on "The other war - the delegitimization of the State of Israel.: Netanyahu will speak on "Memory and the Present in the Israel-Arab Conflict." The event will take place at 2 p.m. in the Senate Hall of the Feldman Building, Bar Ilan University.

THE HEBREW University's Leonard Davis Institute is hosting an international conference on "The Links between Economics and Security - Conceptual, Regional and Practical Dimensions." The conference will be held in room 501 of the Maiersdorf Faculty Club on the Hebrew University's Mount Scopus campus. The two-day event will bring together scholars from Israel, the US and Canada, all of whom are working on various causal links connecting economics and security. Such links include the impact of economic considerations and incentives on the likelihood of armed conflict or conversely, on the likelihood of transition to peace, the impact of security considerations on economic cooperation or economic development and the economic role of third parties in promoting transitions to peace. The conference will cover various conceptual issues, as well as their regional implications for the Middle East, East Asia, Europe and Latin America.
A second goal of the conference is to examine the theoretical aspects against the real-life experience of practitioners. For that purpose, two roundtables will be conducted that will bring together present and past practitioners from Israel, Europe and the US, to discuss the practice of peace-economics the potential and the limitation of using economic tools to reduce conflict and promote peace. Participating in the roundtable discussion on Third party economic intervention in transitions to peace will be head of the European Commission delegation to the State of Israel Ambassador Ramiro Cibrian-Uzan.
