Home Front Defense Minister tells ISDEF 2011 conference more funds should be put toward fortifying home front against attack.

Increased funds should be made available to fortify the home front against attack, Home Front Defense Minister Matan Vilna’i said Monday during a landmark security exhibition in Tel Aviv.Addressing the ISDEF 2011 conference, Vilna’i said there was no longer any distinction between the front and the home front.Israel invested “many billions [of shekels] in the military front and reached enormous achievements. The Israeli military industries are leaders in the world, and our people are among the best and most qualified in the field,” Vilna’i said. “Today, the time has come to invest in the civilian front.”
The minister noted that protecting civilian society against attack has become a focus “of the whole of the democratic world in the past decade.”Vilna’i expressed pride in the Israeli defense technologies on display at the conference, and welcomed the arrival of visitors from abroad to the expo.Products designed to boost counter-terrorism and policing capabilities formed a central part of the three-day exhibition.Vilna’i also led a meeting of the Home Front Defense Ministry, which included Magen David Adom Director-General Eli Bin, Union of Local Authorities Chairman Shlomo Buhbut, and Fire and Rescue Services chief Shahar Ayalon. The meeting was also attended by acting National Emergency Management Authority head Avi David.“Recent events in Israel and the world show there is great importance in providing maximum defense to the home front,” said Tomer Avnon, director-general of Israel Defense 2011.“Today, governments and security forces all over the world are investing large funds in research in order to prepare for unexpected disasters [such as] earthquakes, missile attacks, floods, and more.”
