Defense Minister Ehud Barak was a last-minute no-show at the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Monday, forcing the committee to postpone its scheduled hearing on the crisis surrounding the appointment of the next IDF chief of General Staff.
On Sunday, the committee announced that Barak would appear before it to testify regarding the selection process for the IDF’s top position and answer questions as to why he had refused to extend Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi’s term until a replacement was approved.
Although committee chairman Shaul Mofaz slammed Barak’s absence in an Army Radio interview, Barak’s office responded that the committee had been in error and that the defense minister had never agreed to attend the Monday meeting. Instead, the office said, Barak would appear before the committee next Tuesday.
