Avigdor Liberman's attorneys were set to meet with Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein on Monday to discuss the charges of fraud and breach of trust levied against the foreign minister in the 2008 case involving obstruction of justice by former ambassador to Belarus Ze’ev Ben-Aryeh.Media reports suggested that Liberman's attorneys requested the meeting in order to examine the possibility of reaching a plea bargain with the attorney-general.Although Liberman has not ruled out the possibility of reaching an agreement with the state, on Sunday he suggested his intent was to prove his innocence in court.Liberman announced last Friday he would resign from his position as foreign minister and vice premier in the current government in light of the pending indictment.In a statement published by his office, Liberman said his legal counsel advised him he did not have to resign. Nonetheless, he said he would do so in order to fight the charges against him, thereby enabling him to serve in the next government if exonerated.Liberman said he would immediately drop his parliamentary immunity "so that after 16 years during which investigations have been carried out against me, I can conclude this matter quickly, without delay and clear my name."On Sunday, Liberman formally tendered his resignation, which is due to take effect on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
