Media reports suggest that FM's attorneys requested meeting to examine possibility of reaching plea bargain with the state.

Attorneys, including lead attorney Giorda Aderet, for Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman were set to meet with Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein on Monday afternoon to discuss issues relating to the indictment pending against Liberman in the Belarus ambassador affair.

Media reports suggested that Liberman's attorneys have requested the meeting in order to examine the possibility of reaching a plea bargain with the attorney-general.

  • Analysis: Liberman's not going anywhere
  • Analysis: Liberman plea bargain far from sure

However, the ministry of justice refused to confirm the meeting.

Until now, all leaks regarding a plea bargain appear to have come from Libermans camp, although he himself on Sunday denied that he was seeking a plea bargain and said he was happy to try to clear his name in court.

Weinstein announced on Thursday that he would be filing an indictment against Liberman for fraud and breach of public trust in the Belarus ambassador affair.

Following the announcement of the indictment on Thursday, Liberman handed in his resignation as foreign minister and vice premier on Sunday, which is to take effect on Tuesday.

In the affair, Liberman is accused in 2008 of reviewing classified information about a larger criminal investigation that was pending against him at the time, which was closed on Thursday after at least six years.

Liberman is also accused of helping then Belarus ambassador Zeev Ben-Aryeh obtain future jobs in the foreign ministry in return for having been the one who leaked the information to Liberman.

Ben-Aryeh was convicted for his actions of obstruction of justice in June.
