International Bible Contest participants spent four days this week traveling in Israel with the KKL JNF Education and Youth Department. The contest itself will be taking place on the 64th Independence Day of the State of Israel, attended by PM Benjamin Netanyahu and KKL JNF World Chairman Efi Stenzler, who will be on the panel of judges.
Aron Goldberg, 17, from Toronto, Canada, won the Bible Contest for the Diaspora, along with another winner, at a contest held several days earlier. “I invested many days in studying at home, but now I have actually seen the places I read about,” he said. This is his first visit to Israel, and he said he has learned a lot of things here. “I feel wanted, and there is so much I can take with me from here,” he said.
The other winner of the diaspora contest, Akiva Abramowitz, 17, from New York, agreed with him. “It is very different to learn about Israel and its history from books, because when you get to the place itself everything comes alive.”
Members of the group, who were from different countries all over the world, participated in a bicycle trip on Burma Road and heard about the historical importance of this road, which was opened during the War of Independence in the course of the battles for the besieged city of Jerusalem. These days the road is a popular excursion route that was developed by KKL JNF and includes recreation areas, observation points, benches, memorials, playground equipment and paths for hiking and cycling.
