His Excellency Mr. Paul Kagame, the President of the Republic of Rwanda, planted a tree in the Grove of Nations in Jerusalem at a ceremony that took place on July 10, 2017. The planting ceremony was part of the President and his entourage’s visit to Israel.

Also participating in the ceremony were the Rwanda Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms. Louise Mushikiwabo, the Secretary General of the Intelligence Services Mr. Joseph Nzabamwita, and the Rwandan Ambassador to Israel Mr. Joseph Rutabana. Representatives from Israel included the Chief of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr. Meron Reuven, KKL-JNF Director of International Projects, Conferences and Events Department Ms. Karin Bolton-Laor, KKL-JNF Chief of Protocol Mr. Andy Michelson, and the Israeli Ambassador to Rwanda, Ms. Belaynesh Zevadia.

In his remarks at the ceremony, President Kagame said:

“I am very happy to be a part, like many more before me, of this very meaningful tradition of planting a tree in Jerusalem. It is an honor for us that this tree will represent Rwanda and will take root in this important place. For us, this act symbolizes our shared history and our nation standing by Israel’s side as we walk together towards a better future for our peoples. Planting a tree symbolizes our commitment to care for our environment, which surrounds us and gives us life. This forest serves as a live witness for the ideas of friendship, brotherhood and equality between nations. These values must be preserved and cared for in order for them to prosper. I want to thank KKL-JNF for creating this beautiful forest grove, and I am grateful for the privilege of taking part in it.’
