Despite recent tensions in the North along the Syrian border, and the all-too-frequent rocket-fire from Gaza on Israel's south, over 1 million holiday vacationers visited KKL-JNF forests and parks over the recent Sukkot holiday, enjoying nature and the many and diverse KKL-JNF activities, all free of charge.

Every year, during the holiday season of Sukkot, many residents of Israel go out and about, enjoying the wide range of events, excursions and cultural experiences offered by KKL-JNF all over the country, and this year was no exception: the
KKL
nationwide Walking with KKL-JNF along the Israel National Trail event included family walks and challenging hikes, followed by activities in the forest.

On Tuesday October 2, in Mount Carmel’s Ofer Forest, we joined one of KKL-JNF’s wide-ranging activities at the Shluha Recreation Area, which was established with the help of donations by Friends of JNF Australia, who also continue to maintain the site. On this occasion, an enjoyable family walk along a route that follows part of the Israel National Trail was combined with a variety of fun activities for all ages. Participants were required to sign up ahead of time, but the whole event was free of charge.

A variety of activity centers offered a selection of things to do, all organized by KKL-JNF’s one-year volunteers, who are referred to in Hebrew by the acronym shinshinim. These are youngsters who have postponed their military service in order to devote a year to different types of voluntary service within the community. KKL-JNF is among those operating a one-year program of this kind, and youngsters who volunteer for it work mainly as instructors and guides.
