Gas shortage causes huge increase in use of polluting fuels

The year 2011 saw an 200 percent increase in diesel fuel consumption and 108% rise in jet fuel oil use for electricity generation from the previous year, in part due to decreased availability to natural gas.
Overall, fuel consumption in general amount to 11 million tons and increased by about 5% from 2010 to 2011, while natural gas use decreased by 7%, according to data from the Fuel and Gas Administration of the Energy and Water Ministry Wednesday. Meanwhile, a trend of increased consumption of diesel fuel is expected to continue throughout 2012, until the country's energy supply is able to be hooked up to the enormous Tamar reservoir, off the country’s northern coast.
The administration is examining solutions and potential alternatives to the natural gas depletion issue, in hopes of easing expected electricity shortage that will likely occur this summer, the ministry said.
