Wi-Fi to be installed in Israel's rail cars, stations

More than 600 rail cars and 53 stations will offer passengers wireless internet service by year's end, Israel Railways announced Monday.

In light of the initiative's perceived urgency - wireless technology is already common in rail cars and stations in much of Europe and the United States - the plan has been fast-tracked in order to be fully operational by October. Two Tel Aviv stations - Tel Aviv University and Tel Aviv Savidor Center (Arlozorov) - are scheduled to offer Wi-Fi access as soon as March.

A tender was issued for the Wi-Fi project in November, and on Monday the national rail carrier announced the bid had been awarded to the US multinational Motorola Solutions. The project, including maintenance for the next decade, is estimated to cost some NIS 23 million.
