Amnesty NGO hits Israel for discriminating against Beduins

The Israel branch of the Amnesty International NGO leveled harsh criticism against Jerusalem for discriminating against its Bedouin minority, according to its biannual review released Friday.

"One of our central campaigns is for the rights of Palestinians living in Israel, among them residents of unrecognized Beduin villages in the Negev," said Jonathan Gur, CEO of Amnesty International Israel. "The voices raised in the gathering called for a continued struggle for the village residents until an appropriate solution can be found.

Approximately half of the Negev’s Beduin population – an estimated 70,000 people – live in 45 unrecognized villages, of which 10 are in the process of receiving official recognition from the state. The unrecognized villages are considered illegal and do not receive government services like electricity or water.
